SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Paulina Pogorzelski had 22 points and 17 rebounds but it wasn’t enough to overcome St. Joseph’s balance as the Pumas stopped UIS, 86-65, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference women’s basketball game on Monday at TRAC.

St. Joseph’s got 19 points and 10 rebounds from Tatiana Ortiz and 16 points from Britney Cruse, 13 from Jen Szala and 12 from Katie Novak in improving to 8-18 overall and 6-11 in the GLVC.

Along with Pogorzelski’s effort, the Prairie Stars got 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists from Kelly Thompson. UIS fell to 3-22 and 0-16.

The first half was fast-paced with a lot of scoring as St. Joseph’s moved out to a 12 points lead eight minutes into the contest. UIS was able to get within five (35-30) with 4:39 to play but the Pumas pushed the advantage to 10 (50-40) at intermission.

The second period was all St. Joseph’s as the lead grew to as much as 23 three times including the final.

UIS, which played its final home game of the 2009-10 season, hits the road to conclude the season starting with a visit to Lewis on Thursday.
