SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Maryville posted a 2-1, 11-3 sweep of UIS in a Great Lakes Valley Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday at the Land of Lincoln Complex. In the first game Maryville got all the runs it needed with two in the top of the first. UIS was able to chip away with a solo run in the fourth when Brittany Morgan scored off a hit by Jaylyn Jones. That was as close as UIS would get. Brooke Carroll, Jones and Morgan all had hits for UIS. Alexandra Newbern took the loss for the Prairie Stars allowing seven hits and two runs in her seven innings of work. As it did in the opener, Maryville got all the runs it needed in the nightcap by exploding for eight in the top of the first and then added three more in the third. UIS scored a run in the bottom of the third. Brianne Moeller scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Morgan. The Prairie Stars got another run in the fourth when Aubrey Watson drove in Abby Sparks and added the final run of the game in the fifth when Carroll drove in Moeller with a sacrifice fly. Sparks led the offense with two hits. Moeller took the loss in the circle. UIS hits the road on Tuesday when it travels to Truman State.
