SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The UIS softball team ended the home portion of the 2010 season by splitting a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader with Bellarmine, winning the first game 3-1 and dropping the nightcap 8-6 on Sunday at the Land of Lincoln Complex.

In the opener Bellarmine struck first scoring a single run in the first before UIS jumped ahead with two in their half.  Jaylyn Jones scored on an error and Brianne Moeller scored on a double by Jessica Yocum. The Prairie Stars got an insurance run in the sixth when Brittany Morgan blasted her fifth home run of the season to make the final 3-1.

Moeller, making the final home start of her career, got the win allowing just three hits and striking out eight.

The second game was an offensive affair. Bellarmine opened with three runs in their half of the first and again UIS came back in their half – scoring twice with Abby Sparks’ RBI single being the key blow.

The Knights added two in the third, two more in the fourth and a single run in the sixth before the Prairie Stars mounted a comeback. Down 8-2, UIS scored twice in the sixth inning when Morgan led off with a double and Moeller followed with a two-run blast to right field.

The Prairie Stars tried to rally again in the seventh, scoring two more times on a Jones RBI triple and a sacrifice fly by Moeller but that was the end of the rally.

UIS moved to 13-31 in the season and finished its first season in the GLVC with a 6-22 league mark. The Prairie Stars will wrap up the season on Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Missouri Baptist.
