QUICK TIPS FOR BOOSTERS A Booster or “representative of the institution’s athletics interests” is an individual who: • Has participated in the promotion of UIS athletics, including membership of an organization that has promoted UIS athletics. • Has made financial contributions to the athletics department or to a UIS athletics booster organization. • Has assisted or is assisting a member of the athletics department staff with recruiting. • Has provided or is providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families. • Has otherwise been involved in promoting UIS athletics. • Once an individual is identified as an athletics representative, the person retains that identity indefinitely. (NCAA Bylaw 13.02.11) Recruiting – an athletics representative: • May view a prospective student-athlete’s athletic contest on his or her own initiative, but may not contact the student-athlete on such occasions. • May not contact a prospective student-athlete’s coach, principal or counselor in an attempt to evaluate the prospective student-athlete. • May not visit the prospective student-athlete’s educational institution to pick up materials (film, transcripts) relating to the evaluation of the prospective student-athlete’s eligibility or athletic ability. (NCAA Bylaw 13.1.2.3) Offers and Inducements – an athletics representative may not be involved directly or indirectly in making arrangements for or giving or offering to give any financial aid or other benefits to the prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athletes relatives or friends. Specifically, an athletics representative may not offer: • An employment arrangement for a prospective student-athlete’s relatives. • A gift of clothing or equipment. • Cosigning of or providing loans. • Cash or similar items, including tangible items such as merchandise. • Free or reduced-cost services, rentals, or purchases of any type. • Free or reduced-cost housing. • Use of an institution’s athletics equipment. (NCAA Bylaw 13.2) Extra Benefits – generally, a student-athlete may not receive any extra benefit, special discount, or payment arrangement. Specifically, an athletics representative: • May not provide a student-athlete with professional services (e.g. use of a credit card, use of a car, entertainment services or tickets) at less than the normal rate. • May provide a student-athlete or entire team with an occasional meal, provided the meal is in the athletics representative’s home.
